How to be a Good Dinosaur?

Last week I watched the movie “The Good dinosaur”.I found it quiet inspiring.Arlo was the smallest dinosaur and the day he was born he was weak and small. He was always fearful about small things happening in his life.He felt really upset about it.The movie is all about how instead of being small and weak , he learns from life and emerges out to be strong and fearless.Life throws him in several hardships, but he overcomes them with bravery. He learns from his life that-

A)“You have to get through your fear to get the beauty on other side”.We often miss many wonderful things that life offers to us because we are scared to come out of our comfort zone.

B)You should not feel bad about being scared.”If you ain’t scared, you ain’t alive” .Bravery is not in being fearless but facing those fears, just looking them into their face so that they can no more scare you.

C)“You’ve got to earn your mark by doing something bigger than yourself.” .And is it really possible to do something bigger than ourselves? What an achievement do we feel when we do something which we thought we would never be able to do.The day we do something we think is beyond our strength,we have earned a mark because on death bed we have the satisfaction of doing something extraordinary.

D)Change your perspective and you could be good friends.Arlo initially thought him to be responsible for his father’s death but he found a friend who protected him in this whole journey.

E)Your strength doesn’t depend your size.

F)“A single kindness can change everything.”He saved his friend’s life till the end.

Its only when Arlo was left alone ,he could discover his underlying strength and making a mark was not at all easy,he had to face a lot of problems, but most importantly he learned from difficulties and  moved on.In the end he was a different person, and was proud that he finally made a mark.

4 Things a teacher can learn from Bhagwat Gita

1.Listen to the students-Lord Krishna very patiently listened to Arjun when he was demotivated.Listening will help you know more about your student and the teacher student relationship also strengthens. While listening don’t judge your student, neither be angry on his works.Just understand that he is on his way of learning and he will commit mistakes.

2.Satiate the hunger of inquisitive minds-A teacher should feel very enthusiastic in answering the inquisitive minds and should not be irritated if the student asks more questions.Lord Krishna very patiently answered all questions that were arising in the mind of Arjuna.

3.Answer with validation and reasoning-A student can’t believe in anything you say.He needs a proper reasoning of Why or Why not?Reasoning should be given on your own experience or based on some logic.Find different creative ways of answering a problem.A student should not be taught to just assume things and answers should not just be imposed on him without proper validation and logic. In Bhagwata Gita, Lord Krishna put his points with full validation and reasoning and convinced Arjuna in every possible way.

4.Build a trust relationship with students-Lord Krishna and Arjuna depicted the best student teacher relationship where Arjuna had complete trust on Lord Krishna.Build a relationship with students so that after getting lessons from you they have a strong belief that  the success is for sure and there is no point of defeat.Because at the end their success and their happiness is something that is going to give you immense satisfaction.

When a parent sends their children to school they are actually sending their dreams to you to come true and fulfilling somebody’s dream is a great job.

How much does Yoga matter?

YogaWhen we talk about Yoga, first man whose image occupies our mind is “Ramdev Baba”.He sort of reached each and every household through his daily TV show in the morning. He challenged the so called incurable diseases for which Allopathic treatmnt just showed its helpless face.We Indians always have the mentality that spending more money, going to a renowned doctor will surely cure our disease , but something like Yoga would cure our diseases is rather difficult to accept. How could rubbing our nails , grow hair on head or doing stomach in or out could cause miracles. It appears more like a circus, when Ramdev Baba performs on stage which can be clapped for but not tried.

And for youth ,Yoga is something that is done in old age and for the people who are sick.Youth would rather go to Gym or do aerobics to keep themselves fit .The cool environment of Gym with the energetic music playing in the background and the flexibility to excercise anytime of the day would attract youth more rather than the dull, oldies group of people doing Yoga. But , I liked the idea  of one of the gurus “Sri Sri Ravishankar” ji who has made it really cool through his Art of Living courses especially designed for youth.

Yoga is popular in India only for Foreigners and Indians are busy making money out of it.Life of an ordinary shopkeeper in Rishikesh changed when he started teaching Yoga to foreigners at his home. One of the couples  in  my Apartment left their MBA job and started an online portal to attract Foreigners to learn Yoga and meditation .Foreigners come to India, stay at their home and learn Yoga and meditation and in return pay heavy  donations for the so called free Yoga and Meditation course.

So what does Yoga mean in true sense?

Yoga doesn’t mean only exercising , it is the synchronizing of our body with nature.Have you ever noticed that whenever we do anything against nature, nature revolts back.Whenever we don’t sit or work in correct posture, our backbone aches, whenever we feel tense our blood pressure rises,if we don’t follow healthy diet, our stomach suffers ailments. So, we fall ill because our body looses sync with nature and to be aligned with nature and to escape punishment of nature we need to follow a routine which is given by nature. All the answers to the problems lies with nature.Gautam Buddha , got answers sitting in this very nature when he discovered that the whole universe is working according to nature.

Yoga means union – the union of body with consciousness and consciousness with the soul.”

Why should a completely healthy youth who exercises and plays  various games etc. should do Yoga?

Have you ever noticed the breathing pattern when you are angry? It becomes fast,it means you are doing something against nature and it will harm you.Yoga makes you wise enough to know when you are harming yourself and to become master of your mind.It helps you get that hidden treasure, which you are not even aware of.It tells the real meaning of life,if you seek for.It improves your concentration and you perform best in your everyday life. It’s not about shunning your daily responsibilities but about performing them more dilligently. Some of the famous people like Mahatma Gandhi,Albert Einstien have followed this path.Albert Einstein was spiritually awakened and thus gave humanity a precious gift.He had discovered his true self. He said-

“Still there are moments when one feels free from one’s own identification with human limitations and inadequacies. At such moments, one imagines that one stands on some spot of a small planet, gazing in amazement at the cold yet profoundly moving beauty of the eternal, the unfathomable: life and death flow into one, and there is neither evolution nor destiny; only being.  “

Other benefits of Yoga are-

-The body, mind and energies of an individual attain absolute harmony with the existence.

-You gain mastery over your energies, like getting your batteries charged..Your creativity and ability to perform enhances and your performance improves incomparably without much of extra effort.

So,is not sitting in meditation,being thoughtless,so boring?

When you go to a hill station to the first time, you are spell bound by the beauty of nature .Do you think anything at that moment ? No.It’s because a new experience is very fascinating. Now if I tell you to meditate on a Mantra daily,it will become boring to you.Meditation is like listening to inner sounds daily and they are all new each day, that makes the meditation very interesting and enjoyable.

“Prayer is when you talk to God and Meditation is when God talks to you”.

Everyday in meditation is a new experience, like removing the covers from the true self for it being revealed to you one day.So experiment it and feel your true self of being.

Are woman only meant to do laundry?

Mansi works as an HR manager and is a mother of 6 year old Riya. While coming back from office she picks up Riya from her crèche ,she promptly said,”Mom, please prepare Noodles for me today,I am fed up with daily Roti Sabji.” “Ok! sweetie, sure”. Meanwhile her husband Ashish called her, ”Mansi ,please prepare something special ,my friends are coming up” . So many things were going on in her mind. She went to buy vegetables and other eatables required. After coming back home, she found the house was in total mess, maid had taken leave and all the utensils were kept unwashed. “Oh God!! guests are to come, what I am to do now?”.

Ashish had carelessly thrown his all clothes on bed and his wet towel was lying on sofa. She had told him so many times to atleast put his towel outside after taking bath, but he just throws it on sofa. She quickly washed utensils, prepared food and cleaned her house .Finally, the door bell rang and she ran to welcome the guests. Ashish and guests came and sat comfortably on sofa. She was moving from kitchen to dining room and dining room to kitchen to serve guests. Ashish was comfortably sitting and chatting with his friends, how could he get up and help his wife, what would people say and after all it was women’s job. It was 12 at night, guests had gone, Ashish retired to sleep and she was still left with dozens of tasks to do. She had to assemble things in place, prepare lunch box and dress of her children and husband for the other day. On weekends, she washes the clothes of the whole week for everybody in the family, because after all laundry was never meant to be husband’s job. This way she has to struggle day and night with the burden of two jobs.

This is not only the story of Mansi but of many other women and can be seen in almost every second household where working women are burdened with two jobs.  According to a survey by Ariel , 85% of women feel they have two jobs , one at work and another at home. Capture

An another survey also shows that 76% men feel that laundry is a woman’s job.

Now the question is ,why is there an inequality between men and women within the household, while India is working towards equal opportunities for all at the workplace? How long will Indian men continue to be “patidev” or “God of wife” ?

Our Indian culture is such that although in our households a daughter and son are given equal education but daughters need to learn all household work and sons are not even taught to pick their plates after having food, they are taught that these household chores are only a girls duty. This faulty Indian mentality brings them to a conclusion that women are meant to perform their tasks . They feel ashamed helping their wives.

But times have changed now, men must understand that women have enough pressure and burden when she works, he must support her to share that burden, otherwise she will break. He should understand that when woman is sharing her financial burden then why can’t he help her sometimes in household chores .Not only husbands, even the kids must be taught that its their duty to perform their tasks on their own and help their mothers too.

My mother-an inspiration

In a patriarchal society like ours, a women’s life decisions are always influenced by the society in which she lives. She has to take up a career not according to her passion but what is acceptable in society and that could increase her prospect of getting a good husband. She has to marry a person that is accepted by her parents and relatives and then later in life she has to live a life according to her kids. Her whole life actually doesn’t belong to her. Her dreams, passions are actually crushed under the heavy compromises she has to make in every sphere of her life.

But amidst all that there are women who take a stand and make a choice to fulfill their dream , not a compromise. They refuse to choose between being a mother and a career woman , they say we can be a good mother as well as a good employee. They are the ones who set inspiration for other women to fight for their dreams.

One such woman in my life is my mother. She was a Hindi teacher in school but had to leave her job to takTEC_9767e care of me and my brother and the pressure from her in-laws. She was the most educated lady in her town and at that period of time very few girls had any career goal. As other women my mother had to choose between being a mother OR being a self-dependent woman. But that didn’t deter her aim of chasing her dreams. She always believed that a woman should be self-dependent and has the ability to support her family financially too. She decided to be an entrepreneur and started her own business of a beauty clinic, so that she can have a good work-life balance. At that period of time , in small town the beauty clinics were not regarded as a very good profession and was treated like a barber shop. Many of our relatives discouraged her for this type of business and many made fun of her too .They said it’s not a very honorable job. But my mother believed that no profession is small or big, its honorable job as its making her self-dependent. She stood strong amidst all odds and didn’t give heed to what people said and what was acceptable in society or not, she just listened to her heart and this is due to her firm and bold step that even with a less salary package of my father and burden of home loan we were brought up in a way that we never felt any shortage of money. And at the same time she gave us her full attention too.

She is an inspiration for others that a woman doesn’t have to crush her dreams to be a good mother, she is not meant to sacrifice and make compromises all the time and doesn’t have to live life according to “what people say”. The journey of my mother from OR to AND might be difficult but today she can proudly say “I am a good mother And a good wife And an entrepreneur”.

What defines me is being “True to Myself”

“The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul”.

Every woman has some things that she is passionate about, things that make her who she is.  She is a daughter, sister, wife or mother. No matter what role she plays ,she is defined by a multitude of things which makes her perfect in her own sense. She is the one who is known to be better than son, she is the one who bears a child and gives life, she is the one who can smile in all odds, she is the one who lifts her child in every difficult circumstances. Beauty of a woman grows with passing years, she is groomed day by day by the circumstances she faces. The things that define me besides the labels of a daughter, sister, wife or a mother were added to my personality day by day and are being added as I grow.I would like to share some of them.

1.Positivity-It is very important for me that I start my day with Yoga and meditation. This keeps me positive throughout the day and re energizes my body.I feel life is balanced and have the faith and strength to fight in every circumstances. It has become a very integral and important part of my life.

2.Planning-I plan my day such that I can devote my precious time to each and every important thing in my life. This is important as at the end of the day I feel happy and satisfied .I believe that like a child I have a milestone to achieve daily which makes me grow day by day.Planning relieves me of all worries and I become a good Home manager too.

3.Creativity-I think creative thinking rejuvenates your mind and fills your life with surprises.I apply creativity in cooking which makes my family enjoy their meals daily,I apply creativity in playing with my daughter which helps her learn things naturally.Creativity at work has brought me lots of accolades too and my writings and poems have got me praises and love from many.

4.Passion-I believe one is dead without a passion in life.My passion for reading and writing keeps me happy even when I am all alone. They are my lifelong friends with no expectations.

5.Compassion-I feel a great satisfaction in doing something for the underprivileged small kids around me.I believe they are the stars which have lost their lights under poverty.I just sometimes devote some time with them and celebrate me or my kid’s birthday with them.I gift my family with this “Joy of Giving“.

Celebrating Birthday with underprivileged kids

6.Sense of Humor-It is truly said that “Just see the funnier side of life and there is no problem”. With the gift of “sense of humor”,people tend to enjoy my company and I too enjoy life.

I believe the true identity of a woman is not only being a successful doctor or engineer, its about being a woman of your dreams, where you can stand and firmly say,”Yes!this is is what I wanted to be” and on the death bed you have no regrets of not living your life to the fullest. My life shouldn’t be defined by others,my identity should be set  by my own set of dreams. This is what truly defines me “True to myself”.

Dream to be hunger-free India!!!!

India is facing a major challenge of poverty and hunger.Poverty and hunger is a vicious circle as due to poverty a child has to work to end his and his family hunger and this in turn ruins his childhood and education making him poor whole of his life. The only way to come out of  this vicious circle is to end hunger which in turn will automatically end poverty. These are some of the measures that can be taken to eliminate classroom hunger and encourage children to join school.

  1. Healthy and nutritious mid-day meals-Though government has implemented this scheme in all government schools but most of the times it is seen that the meal is unhygienic and many times made students sick or even die. Most of the students now out of fear don’t eat the meal provided or get their own meals from home. Akshaya Patra ,an NGO has come up with a very nice concept of centralized kitchens which provides healthy and nutritious meals and the day is not far when each and every school will be benefitted from it. One more thing that can be implemented to ensure them diet full of nutrition is some food supplement/powders which can be had with water, that will ensure that they are getting proper nutrition too, even if the food they get is not healthy.
  2. To have corporate partners and public schools as food sponsors-Events can be organized once in a week in a company or school whereby everybody will devote a day to prepare healthy meals and serve them. Even public school students can devote a day to prepare meals and serve them .This will give our young generation a sense of service and make them a better citizen. With the meals, kids should be given some chocolates/sweets to make the meals more exciting for them. Students of public schools can be appreciated by certificates so that they are encouraged to take up such types of events in future.
  3. To get them to school-We have ample of government schools in our country, but there is a shortage of students as well as teachers. Only half of the students who enroll in school actually attend the school. This is due to the lack of enthusiastic teachers who know they are not going to be kicked out when if they don’t teach. That makes environment for students altogether boring.NGOs must come forward to conduct weekend activities like drawing competition, sports etc. in schools and give away prizes .This will encourage them to come to school. Even common people can contribute towards it. Any individual can celebrate his/her birthday in the school, which will make them enjoy and have gifts and sweets too.
  4. To get them good education-Even if students come to school what is the use if they are not able to write their names even? To impart good education, the school needs to implement interesting education techniques and hire responsible teachers. There should be a check in government schools so that each and every teacher teaches properly like it is in public schools.NGOs must come forward and impart training to government schools teachers on latest teaching techniques and skills.
  5. Integrating technology in education-Technology not only makes subjects interesting but easy to grasp too. But for that the biggest challenge for these schools is electricity.
  6. Helping employ parents of these kids-If the parents of these kids have proper means of earning, they won’t encourage their children to work or beg. So, giving their parents some benefits will surely encourage them to send their child to school.

But all these seemingly impossible things are possible only when all of us join hands and take a pledge to make our country free of hunger and make it a place where every child is educated. You can also contribute towards it by spreading the words of the efforts of Akshaya Patra.

Let us become socially responsible citizens.

I am going to #BlogToFeedAChild with Akshaya Patra and BlogAdda.
